| Learning Islands
In Germany, comprehensive schools are often seen as gathering places for problematic pupils.
In contrast, the Carlo-Schmid Grammar School, founded in 1974 in Berlin-Spandau, is dedicated to helping individual pupils
to achieve the degree that is best for them. In doing so, the educators emphasize the importance of school identity.
With the support of the Baupiloten, pupils from grades 7 through 11 worked together in a multi-phase project to design and
shape their daily surroundings. In order to provide the particularly anonymous school building with a more personal atmosphere,
the students developed a series “learning islands” for a variety of everyday situations. They then constructed life-size models
of the islands themselves: “It’s a nice feeling to be able to contribute something that can improve daily school life.“ Louisa and Jenia |
