| The service spine We decided to formalize both the daily rituals of residence and the notion of servicing within the spine. This embraced activities as disparate as brushing one’s teeth, loading up the wood box, filling the coal oil lamps and stowing away the summer furniture. We left the spine open-ended for a possible further extension. More habitable rooms can be attached and the threshold moves outwards. The opaque exterior skin is fir sheathing ply. The salvaged windows are of frameless sheets of tempered glass. The roof is in effect one long gutter and protected by a single sheet of EPDM. Industrials detritus such as perforated aluminium plate for the shower floor, a trucks mirror assembly and a janitor’s mixer of the sink station and scrap zinc sheeting for the mudroom reinforce the service aspect. |
