The constraints of building   within a tight budget on an island with no services whatsoever were manifold: The building materials were all towed across a narrows by a 12’ aluminium skiff and lugged up off the beach to the site. The absence of electricity affected our capacity to rip, sand or otherwise shape the materials or limited the length of our working day. The small budget suggested the use of found materials, the sifting of crapyards, skips and derelict sites. There was an absence of any pre-fabricated systems. The two of us took a summer and a fall to build 242 sq.ft of servicing and a 155 sq.ft bedroom to the original 500 sq.ft cabin at a material of 7074 Can. Dollars of 95 pounds per m2.
